Frequently Asked Questions
-
Everything is made from upcycled fabric, yarn and beads - ensuring every piece is not only sustainable and kind to our earth, but also completely one-of-a-kind.
-
Every piece of fabric is pre-loved. It is purchased from thrift and second hand shops, giving new life to discarded fabric. The yarn and beads for the accessories is also thrifted, and all the thread, and jewellery fastenings and fixings are purchased in Nelson, from The Stitch Lab and Abacus Beads.
-
Yes, upcycling is one of the most eco-friendly fashion choices you can make. By converting discarded thrifted fabrics into premium, wearable art, I divert textile waste directly away from landfills, reduce the demand for new resource-heavy fabric production, and actively support the circular fashion economy.
-
Every piece of reclaimed textile, vintage linen, and thrifted garment I source undergoes a rigorous sanitation process. Materials are deeply washed, sanitized using eco-friendly detergents, and thoroughly inspected for structural integrity at Butterflies in Ballgowns Nelson, BC studio before being cut and sewn into new garments.
-
Because Butterflies in Ballgowns garments are constructed from pre-loved, thoroughly washed vintage and thrifted textiles, the fabrics have already undergone their natural structural shrinkage. When cared for correctly—washed in cold water and hung to dry—your upcycled clothing will maintain its size, color profile, and shape for years to come.
-
Dopamine dressing is the practice of wearing vibrant, joyful, and brightly colored clothing intentionally chosen to boost your mood. At Butterflies in Ballgowns, I design one-of-a-kind, colorful upcycled clothing to celebrate this aesthetic.
-
Absolutely!! I can create custom orders in your choice of fabric, and also made to size.
-
Because Butterflies in Ballgowns sustainable garments are handmade using unique thrifted fabrics, sizing can vary from traditional fast-fashion brands. We provide exact measurements (including chest, waist & hips) on every individual product listing. Check our comprehensive Size Guide to find out how to measure yourself.
-
To preserve the hand-stitched craftsmanship and vintage textiles, I highly recommend washing your garments in cold water on a gentle cycle. For best results and to extend the life of your slow-fashion pieces, hang or lay flat to dry instead of using a machine dryer. For more information, check out the Butterflies in Ballgowns care guide.
